Episode 2: Artifact

This week on Halo 4: Spartan Ops — The mysterious artifact recovered from Requiem takes control of vital systems on board the UNSC Infinity, forcing the Spartans of Crimson and Majestic back down to the planet to look for a way to free the ship. Commander Lasky and the UNSC need you, Spartan…get back in the game!

We start with Majestic squad pinned down in a firefight with some Prometheans. Madson asks “Hasn’t this area been cleared already?” which is a hint to the fact that we will be doing some revisiting in the missions.

Should a Spartan really have to look in his scope? Shouldn’t it just display on his HUD? It would make it rather difficult for someone using Wetwork I would imagine.

There are two instances in this encounter that showcase the fact that while the S-IV’s are great, they aren’t the S-II’s. Madson standing in the middle of combat, not even paying attention to the fight, and Hoya breaking cover, then not listening to orders to get back. These are things that a Spartan 2, or 3 for that matter, would never do. Even though the best of the best has been recruited into this new program, they will never have the intense and prolonged training and indoctrination of th previous two generations of Spartans.

This also shows in the next scene, when Madson simply waves to his commander, Grant does nothing, and DeMarco opens up with his frustrations. This may well be the kind of relationship Plamer wants with her Spartans, but the fact remains that this kind of behaviour would be impossible for a 2. Not to say that I don’t like it. I enjoy seeing DeMarco open up and be a little awkward  because he knows he is making excuses. Palmer also doesn’t flip out, and you can see how she respects, and has respect in return.

Eggheads. A word I think I will soon learn to loathe…

The Artifact goes crazy and does what looks almost like a “Didact” Scan of the ship.

I really like how Roland looks at his hands and hesitates, like he can feel the Artifact doing something to the ship.

Here we meet a new character, Dr. Glassman (That may be wrong, just going by the sound). While he doesn’t last long, he does have an interesting couple lines. He references Dr Halsey and how she helped work on Infinity. You will pick that up right away if you’ve read The Thursday War.

If all else fails, kick it.

Now, I don’t know about you, but I think this guy has a death wish. Hmmmm, Shiny pulsating box, recovered from the planet owned by the guy who just tried to digitally enslave the human race. That’s got to be perfectly safe, no? I actually didn’t expect what did happen for all of that.

Now, was he scanned like the composer, or sent somewhere, like a mini slipspace portal? I’m going to go with composed. It’s a pocket composer.

Notice how when Lasky tries to grab Glassman, Palmer shouts “Tom!”. Not captain, commander, sir, or even Thomas. I think this hints to a deeper relationship than just Commander to Captain. Not to say that they are romantic in any way, or that it will go there. I just found that interesting.
